Department of Mathematics

Department of mathematics organizes education tour to every year to motivate  the students towards higher studies in mathematics. In the year 2018-19, the tour to visit to “IIT Bombay, Powai, Mumbai” was organized on 16/01/2019. 37 students of S.Y/T.Y.B.Sc (Mathematics) accompanied with three faculty members participated. During the interaction with the faculty members of IIT, various aspects of mathematics was discussed.  The workshop was conducted at Bhaskaracharya Pratisthana, Pune on Monday 30th December 2019. It was arranged as a combined effort of Bhaskaracharya Pratisthana and Poona College of Arts, Science and Commerce Pune. This workshop was initiated by Dr. Nivedita Mahajan ,Modern College (Autonomous) Shivajinagar, Pune in view of the necessity and interest of BSc(Computer Science) teachers of colleges under SPPU.  Dr. Aftab Anwar Shaikh , Principal, Poona College inaugurated the workshop. He motivated the participants to cultivate the interest in using technological facilities to enhance future academically and financially.  Dr. S. A. Katre from Bhaskaracharya Pratisthana elaborated the role and activities of the Pratisthana to the participants. Dr. Shaikh was felicitated at the hands of renowned Mathematician Dr. Kishor Marathe,University of NewYork.  Dr. Amjad Shaikh from Poona College guided the participants as a resource person in LaTeX and Maxima.  Dr. Amjad Shaikh helped the participan

State level Quiz and Puzzle competition was organized by the department on  11/01/2020 .  The competition was held team wise. Each team consist of three participants. 48 students from various colleges of the state participated. The competition i nspired the student to learn about  Mathematics in science and daily life. it develop problem solving skill, cognitive skill, hand-eye coordination among the students and motivated them to face challenges.   Participants in a team of two attempting the Entry Round. The Intercollegiate Quiz Competition was organized by department of Mathematics on 23 rd January 2019 .   Around 45 students in a team of 3 from various colleges of Pune participated. Students  enjoyed the competition with gain of knowledge . A trip to IUCAA was organised on celebration of National Science Day  On 29th February 2020. 16 students of TYBSc(Maths) along with Prof. Akhlaque Ahmed of the department participated. They gain the knowledge about Black holes and Clusters.Over all the trip was fruitful and students enjoyed it. Students of TYBSC at IUCAA with prof. Akhlaque Ahmed

  The Intercollegiate Puzzle Competition was organized by department of Mathematics on 23 rd  January 2019 .   Around 40 students participated. The competition was held team wise, each team with 2 participants.  Students  enjoyed the competition with gain of knowledge . The competition   develops the problem solving skills, creates competency and boost up self confidence among the students.   The team securing the highest score was declared as winner and awarded with medal and certificate. Department of Mathematics has organized an outreach program for the children of Y & M ANJUMAN KHAIRUL ISLAM Orphanage Mahabaleshwer, on 8/2/2020. The title of program was "Fun with Mathematics". It was conducted under the Banner of Muskan  & Golden Jubilee Year of AKI'S Poona College of Arts, Science and Commerce. 27 students of  T.Y.B.Sc  (Maths ) along with the HOD & Faculties of the Department actively participated and enjoyed the event.  Orphans enjoying the Fun-Math presented by T.Y.B.Sc. Department of Mathematics organized an inter collegiate Poster Competition entitled " Applications of Mathematics in Real/ Daily life" on 7th September 2019 for F.Y.B.Sc/B.Sc(Computer Science) students. Around 46  students participated. Students made posters/ projects to depict the applications of mathematics in daily life. Posters were evaluated by judges considering the visitor's feedback. Participants and visitors gained knowledge about how mathematics is used in every day life and how it form a backbone for almost every field.
